How we work
How we compare
How products earn a place in a comparison, what our badges mean, and how this site makes money.

How products are chosen
For each category we shortlist the models that appear repeatedly in published third-party testing and expert editorial coverage, along with the well-known options a shopper is realistically weighing up. We publish a comparison only when there is enough independent coverage to say something useful about strengths and drawbacks.
We then compare them on the same spec rows, side by side, and name what each one is best for, so a comparison answers a real decision rather than listing features.
What we read
Published hands-on testing and long-term reporting from established outlets, expert editorial reviews, manufacturer specification sheets, and consensus reporting on owner experience in the trade and consumer press.
What we do not use: Amazon customer review text, star ratings, review counts, or copied review copy of any kind. Our summaries are our own words.
What the badges mean
Every category names one top pick, and the other badges describe the role a product plays in that comparison. They are editorial labels, not paid placements.
Our top pick after weighing every trade-off.
The most capability for the least money.
Best performance if price is secondary.
The one shoppers keep coming back to.
What our summaries are, and are not
The consensus summary, the pros and the cons on each product are our own synthesis of the public testing and coverage listed above. They are editor-written, not user reviews, and they are not a substitute for reading the original testing yourself.
We do not invent quotes, testimonials or user reviews, and no brand can pay to be included or to have a drawback removed.
What we deliberately leave out
Prices, star ratings, review counts, availability, shipping and Prime claims, and Amazon-hosted photography. These either change too quickly to be trustworthy or belong to Amazon. Confirm the current price and details on Amazon before buying.
Images
Product images here are licensed assets: manufacturer press images used with permission, or photography we produced. We do not hotlink or republish retailer imagery.
How we make money
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Product buttons lead to Amazon with our associate tag, and we may earn a commission if you buy. It does not cost you more, and it does not affect rankings, badges, pros, cons or which product we call the winner. There is no paid placement on this site, and no brand has editorial input.
Corrections and keeping this current
If a specification or a claim here is wrong, tell us through the contact page with the source and we will check it. We revisit comparisons when a model is replaced, a revision ships, or published testing shifts the picture.
SmartChoice Compare is written and maintained by a small independent editorial team. We are not affiliated with the brands we cover, or with Amazon.
