Robot Vacuums
Robot vacuum navigation, mapped: which kind suits your floor plan
Bumping, camera and lidar robots behave very differently in a real home. Your floor plan and clutter matter more than the specification sheet.
Three navigation families
- Bounce navigation. The robot changes direction on contact and covers the room by repetition. Suited to a single open room, and slow everywhere else.
- Camera and visual mapping. The robot builds a map from what it sees. It plans tidier routes than a bouncer, but needs some light to work, and it struggles in rooms where everything looks the same.
- Lidar. A spinning sensor measures the room directly, so mapping is fast and works in the dark. It adds height to the robot, which matters under low furniture.
Maps, no-go zones and more than one floor
Once a robot maps a space you can usually name rooms, set no-go zones and send it to one area. Multi-floor support varies: some systems save several maps, others need a new run to relearn.
Carpet, thresholds and pet hair
Check the climb height against your door thresholds, and look at the brush design: rubber rollers resist hair tangles better than bristle brushes, and a raised pile needs more suction than a flat weave. Rugs with dark edges confuse some camera-based robots.
Maintenance you should expect
Emptying the bin and dock bag, rinsing filters, clearing hair from the roller and cleaning sensors. The more automation a robot has, the more stations it has to look after.
How we compare them
Our comparison rows cover navigation type, dock style, climb height and bin size so the differences are visible side by side. See the robot vacuum comparison.

How to pick a cordless drill driver for the work you actually do
Voltage describes the battery platform, not what the tool can do. These are the specifications that decide whether a drill drives a long screw cleanly and bores a straight hole.
