Ice retention claims: how to read them before choosing a cooler
Every brand publishes a retention figure, and they are not measured the same way. Here is what changes the result in real use.
How retention is measured
A retention claim is the time ice lasts under a particular test: a set ambient temperature, a set starting ice quantity, a set fill ratio and a stated number of lid openings. Brands choose different test conditions, so a five-day claim from one maker and a five-day claim from another are not directly comparable. Treat the number as a ranking device within published third-party testing rather than a promise about your trip.
Wall thickness, gasket and latch
Insulation thickness, the quality of the lid gasket and whether the latch pulls the lid down evenly decide most of the real-world result. A warped lid loses cold air faster than any insulation upgrade can compensate for.
Pre-chilling and how you load it
Chill the cooler and the contents beforehand, keep the ice-to-contents ratio high, and use block ice or a frozen bottle alongside cubes. A cooler packed full holds temperature far longer than one that is half empty, because air moves heat around.
Size and how you will carry it
A large cooler is heavy when full, and two people are usually needed once ice and drinks are in. Check the external dimensions against your vehicle and the handles against how far you have to carry it.
How we compare them
Our comparison rows cover capacity, insulation type, latch design and drain plug. See the camping cooler comparison.

How to pick a cordless drill driver for the work you actually do
Voltage describes the battery platform, not what the tool can do. These are the specifications that decide whether a drill drives a long screw cleanly and bores a straight hole.
