Riding Lawn Mowers
Matching a riding mower to your property, not the showroom
The property decides the machine. Measure the gate, the slope and the obstacles before you look at engines.
Measure first
Before comparing anything, note the width of the narrowest gate the mower must pass, the steepest slope it will climb, the number of trees and beds it has to work around, and the turning space at the end of each run. These four numbers eliminate more machines than any engine specification.
Deck width and mowing time
A wider deck cuts a large open lawn in fewer passes, but it also needs more clearance between obstacles and a bigger turning circle. On a lawn with several beds, a wide deck can end up slower than a narrower one because you spend the time repositioning.
Transmission
Hydrostatic transmission gives smooth, variable speed and holds a steady pace on slopes, at the price of more complex servicing. Geared transmissions are simpler and predictable, though you choose between fixed speeds as you mow.
Discharge, mulching and bagging
Side discharge is the fastest way through long grass, mulching returns clippings to the lawn, and bagging keeps the surface clear. Many decks support two or three of these with a kit, which changes the width the machine needs to clear.
Storage and maintenance
Check the height of the machine against your shed door, and whether the deck can be reached for blade changes without lifting the whole unit.
How we compare them
Our comparison sets deck size, transmission, turning radius and cutting height against the same rows. See the riding lawn mower comparison.

How to pick a cordless drill driver for the work you actually do
Voltage describes the battery platform, not what the tool can do. These are the specifications that decide whether a drill drives a long screw cleanly and bores a straight hole.
