Air Fryers
Air fryer capacity: what a basket size really holds
Quart and litre ratings are measured to the brim. Usable cooking area, basket shape and rack design decide how much food actually fits.
Rated capacity is not usable space
Basket capacity is often measured to the top of the rim. In use, food needs to sit below the maximum line with room for air to move around it, so the practical amount is smaller than the label suggests. Two fryers with the same rating can hold noticeably different amounts of food.
Round, square and flat baskets
A square basket uses its footprint more efficiently than a round one of the same rating, which matters when you cook flat items like fish fillets or slices of bread. Deeper baskets suit stacked items, wider ones suit a single layer for browning.
Single, dual-basket and oven-style
A single basket is simple and takes up less counter space. Dual baskets let you cook two things at different settings at once, at the cost of footprint and two lots of cleaning. Oven-style designs trade basket convenience for more even heat and larger trays.
Power, airflow and crisping
Higher wattage heats up faster and recovers temperature better when you open the drawer, but airflow design and basket depth do more for even browning. Give food space, shake or turn it partway through, and dry the surface for a crisper finish.
Cleaning and counter space
Check whether the basket and tray are dishwasher safe, whether the heating element is exposed and awkward to wipe, and where the machine will actually live on the counter.
